MACKINAC ISLAND, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Four of the five remaining Republicans seeking their party’s nomination for governor in Michigan debated at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island yesterday.
Ryan Kelley refused to take part over COVID-19 requirements that were in place for the conference but not for the debate.
Tudor Dixon, Ralph Rebandt, Kevin Rinke, and Garrett Soldano were questioned about school safety, will they accept election results, and more. All agreed the state needs to spend less money and they want to secure schools with armed teachers or former military members.
Meantime, retired Detroit Police Chief James Craig will not be on the ballot for the August Republican primary for governor. The Michigan Court of Claims rejected his appeal this week of the Board of State Canvassers ruling that he did not have enough valid voter signatures to qualify.
Four other candidates were also kept from the ballot, with Michigan State Police Captain Michael Brown withdrawing from the race and the four others trying to fight in court. All four have failed.
