HOLLAND, MI (WHTC AM/FM) – A 19-year-old man is in custody and is awaiting arraignment on charges stemming from a shooting that killed one teenager and critically wounded another near the Hope College campus late Wednesday night.
The Holland Department of Public Safety said shortly before 10:30 p.m. officers were called for a report of a shooting on College Avenue between 16th and 17th streets.
Investigators believe the two teenagers were riding bicycles on College Avenue when they were shot. A 19-year-old Holland man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim, an 18-year-old Holland man, was taken to the hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.
The victims were not Hope College students, according to the college.
Hope College was placed on lockdown around 10:00 p.m. Wednesday. The lockdown was lifted around 1:00 a.m. Thursday.
On Thursday afternoon, Police Services Captain Bob Buursma announced that a 19-year-old Holland man was identified and arrested. “The suspect and the victims were known to each other and this was not a random act,” he said in a department statement.
The suspect, whose identity will be disclosed following arraignment in Holland District Court, will be charged at this point with one count of open murder, one count of assault with intent to commit murder, and a felony firearm count.
Buursma provided no update as to the condition of the other shooting victim.
