Volleyball’s McKenna Otto and Women’s Basketball’s Olivia Voskuil Are Co-Recipients of John Schouten Award
Volleyball’s McKenna Otto and women’s basketball’s Olivia Voskuil are co-recipients of Hope College’s John Schouten Award for the 2021-22 school year.
The John Schouten Award has been presented annually since 1983 to the outstanding female athlete in the senior class.
The award is named in memory of John (Jack) Schouten, a long-time physical educator at Hope and the college’s first athletic director.
Otto (Wheaton, Illinois / Wheaton North HS) helped the Flying Dutch win an MIAA regular-season championship, advance to the NCAA Division III regional finals, and finish with a 25-5 overall record. The middle blocker recorded career-highs in total digs with 238 and tied her career-high service aces with 38. Otto averaged a team-high stats of 3.21 kills and 3.9 points per set. The biomedical/biomechanical engineering major received American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Second Team honors for the second time in her career as well as All-MIAA First Team distinctions for the fourth time in four seasons.
Off the court, Otto was voted to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America® Second Team for the second consecutive season. Otto also made the MIAA Academic Honor Roll in her freshman, sophomore, and junior years.
Voskuil (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) helped the Flying Dutch claim their third Division III women’s basketball national championship. Hope finished with a 32-1 overall record that included an MIAA Tournament title as well as a MIAA regular-season co-championship. The fifth-year senior and starting center was named a D3hoops.com Fourth Team All-American after averaging career-highs with 9.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.1 blocks per game this season. Voskuil also averaged 1.5 assists per game over 33 games. MIAA coaches voted Voskuil as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year for a record fourth consecutive season and to the All-MIAA First Team for the third consecutive seasons.
A civil engineering major, Voskuil played in all 138 games during her career, including 107 starts, and shared the games played record with teammate Kenedy Schoonveld. Voskuil ranked first in career blocks with 259, second in career steals with 246, seventh in career rebounds with 772, and 10th in career points with 1,145. Voskuil made the MIAA Academic Honor Roll her first four seasons.
Runner Nick Hoffman Named Otto van der Velde Award Honoree
Runner Nick Hoffman has been chosen as recipient of Hope College’s Otto van der Velde Award for the 2021-22 school year.
The Otto van der Velde Award has been presented since 1932 to a senior man for outstanding contribution to the college in athletics, scholarship, and participation in student activities.
The award is named in memory of Dr. Otto van der Velde, a 1915 Hope College graduate who lettered in four sports and was later team physician for more than 40 years.
Hoffman (Holland, Michigan / Holland HS) is a two-sport athlete who has excelled in cross country and track field. The public accounting major repeated as the MIAA’s outdoor champion in the 1,500 meters and earned All-MIAA honors. Hoffman contributed the Flying Dutchmen’s run to a second-place finish at the MIAA Outdoor Championships.
During the indoor track and field season, Hoffman ran on the distance medley relay that earned the first All-America honors in the event with a fourth-place finish in March. Hoffman claimed an MIAA title in the 1-mile run in February and set a school record in the 800 meters. Hoffman claimed All-MIAA First Team honors.
During the cross country season, Hoffman qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time last fall and helped the Flying Dutchmen to a runner-up finish at the MIAA Championships. Hoffman finished second individually at the MIAA Championships and received All-MIAA honors for the first time.
In the classroom, Hoffman made the MIAA Academic Honor Roll his first three seasons.
