ALLEGAN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — In observation of National Hepatitis Awareness Month this May, the Allegan County Health Department is offering a free walk-in clinic for Hepatitis A vaccinations and testing for Hepatitis B and C on Tuesday, May 17, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. for adults, at 3255 122nd Avenue, Suite 200, in Allegan.
Health officials say that all three types of hepatitis have been on the rise since 2016, and are contagious to others through person-to-person contact. They say also that Hepatitis A and B are vaccine-preventable diseases, with Hepatitis C being a curable disease.
And although Hepatitis B is not curable according to health experts, they report that with treatment, risk of developing serious complications can be reduced.
Through testing, individuals can learn if treatment is needed, especially for those not experiencing symptoms.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends Hepatitis C testing among all adults at least once in their lifetime, and Hepatitis B and C testing among all pregnant people during early pregnancy, regardless of age.
