Henry was born on February 6, 1934, in Long Island City, NY to August and Pauline (Klimke) Kappel. He attended Saint Paul’s School in Garden City, NY, Dartmouth College, and Brooklyn Law School. Henry’s first job was doing statistical work for the Federal Government; he then worked for the Grinnell Music Company in Detroit and later the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, finishing there in 1970. In 1967, he married JaNelle Sharp in Iowa, and in 1971, they began Lake Tire Service in Holland which they later ran with their son, Mark. Henry loved photography (especially Lake Michigan Sunsets), boating (favorite port was Beaver Island), bicycling and reading. He was a member of Christ Memorial Church.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Florence Kappel Bettendorf; and a brother-in-law, Philip Bettendorf.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, JaNelle; children, Jennifer (Ernie) Fischer, Mark Kappel; grandchildren, Pauline Fischer, Ernie Fischer III, Maxwell Kappel; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces, and one great-grandnephew.
