WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 15, 2022) – Zeeland’s Congressman is not welcome in Red Square right now.
The Russian government this week placed six-term Republican Bill Huizenga among 398 US House members from both sides of the political aisle, including all of those from the Michigan delegation in the lower chamber, who have been denied access into that nation over continuing sanctions due to the conflict in Ukraine. Not only does Huizenga feel that the exclusion is a “badge of honor,” he has legislation pending that would even make him more of a personae non gratis in Moscow.
“They cannot use traditional banking methods to service their debt,” the lawmaker said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly interview on Thursday. “What that means is this: They get all of their cash through selling of energy right now, and they get it in US dollars. They then turn around and use that to pay off their debt. This (bill) would limit that, and they’re not real happy, as you can imagine.”
The US enacted a similar ban on over 300 Russian lawmakers last month, and this move by the Kremlin is seen as a retaliatory measure.
