WORCESTER, MA (WKZO AM/FM) – For the seventh time in program history, the Western Michigan University hockey program heads to the NCAA Tournament taking on Northeastern on Friday at 12 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
Robin Hook and Alex Goodman will have the radio call on the Bronco Radio Network.
Western Michigan heads into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed for the first time in program history. To earn that top seed the Broncos finished the regular season with a 25-11-1 record. The 25 wins are the most by the program since the 1995-96 season.
WMU finished in third place in the NCHC with a 14-9-1 record, the most conference wins in the program’s NCHC era.
The Broncos have the fourth-best offense in the nation, averaging 3.68 goals per game. The team’s goals against average and total goals scored of 136 are the most since the 2000-01 tournament. All of this offensive power is the result of four players with 30+ points, the most since the 2006-07 season, which also posted four.
Leading the way is senior forward Drew Worrad, who has 44 points on nine goals and 35 assists. He’s the first 40-plus point scorer for WMU since Patrick Galivan posted 47 during the 2008-09 season. Fifth-year senior Ethen Frank has a team and nation-best 26 goals, while defensemen Ronnie Attard and Michael Joyaux have 36 and 32 points respectively. Attard’s 36, coming on 13 goals and 23 assists, are the second-most in the nation by a defenseman and the Broncos are the only program in the nation with more than one 30-plus point producing defenseman.
