HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 23, 2022) – The identity of a 58-year-old Holland Township man who lost his life on Saturday evening as a result of a two-vehicle crash has now been officially disclosed, while the man accused in his death has appeared in court.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday that it was Thomas Deweys of Holland who was struck and killed while walking on a sidewalk near Butternut Avenue.
On Monday afternoon, Oscar Mar-Arteaga of Holland was arraigned in Holland District Court on a charge of driving while intoxicated causing death. Judge Juanita Bocanegra set bond at $250,000, and Mar-Arteaga remains in the Ottawa County Jail.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Keith Biros, deputies and other first responders were dispatched to Butternut Drive near Rose Park Drive around 8:15 PM. “The investigation found that a pickup truck, driven by a 27-year-old Holland man, was southbound on Butternut when the truck side swiped another vehicle,” Biros said in a department statement. “This initial collision caused the truck to lose control and veer to the right, entering the sidewalk and striking a pedestrian. The truck then collided with six separate parked vehicles before coming to a stop.”
Deweys was pronounced dead at the scene, while the pickup truck driver was not hurt.
Sheriff’s Captain James Douglas added that, “The Sheriff’s Office is looking to speak with an unknown female that was walking with the victim at the time of the accident.”
