WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Transportation Department said Friday it was offering $69 million to 127 aviation manufacturing and repair businesses under a COVID-19 relief program created by Congress in 2021.
In total, the department has now offered $673 million nationwide in three rounds of awards. Some awards previously offered were not ultimately paid. Congress created the $3 billion aviation manufacturing payroll subsidy program to cover up to half of eligible companies’ compensation costs for as long as six months.
The department said the application process is now closed. It is not clear what will happen to the remainder of the funds that are not distributed. The offer requires companies to commit to not conducting furloughs without employee consent or laying off employees covered by subsidies during the six-month period.
