ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 31, 2022) – Allegan County government may be developing a reputation of reusing old buildings to serve new purposes.
On the heels of the move of the county jail and the sheriff’s department to the former Hayworth seating plant eight years ago was this past Friday’s “groundbreaking” for the re-purposing of the former Shopko store in Allegan to serve as the new home of the county’s mental health services. It would combine what is now in two buildings at the county’s Dumont Lake campus, according to county board chairman Jim Storey of Holland.
“The ripple effect of that is it would be freeing up a lot of space,” the Holland Republican said in a recent appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town.” “This year, I think it’s very important for our Board of Commissioners to develop a plan for what we are going to use for that space.”
The “new” facility that could serve up to 500 people at any one time should be ready by early next year.
