LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed bills into law which will extend the terms of Michigan county commissioners from two years to four years.
The change won’t start until the November 2024 election.
County Commissioners who win election in next November’s election will serve a two year term until the new law takes effect.
The bills had bipartisan support in the House and Senate.
Detroit area Democratic Senator Jeremy Moss sponsored one of the bills.
He said in a statement the new laws will help county commissioners focus more on governing rather than “election year politics.”
