HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – One woman was hospitalized following a house fire just north of the Holland Historic District on Saturday (Dec. 11, 2021) morning.
According to Captain Chris Tinney of the Holland Department of Public Safety Fire Services, crews were dispatched to the residence in the 100 block of West 10th Street, west of Maple Avenue, around 9 AM on a report of a blaze in which one occupant was unable to escape. “Further dispatch information indicated that there was smoke beginning to fill the home, and a tree had possibly fallen on it,” Tinney said in a department statement.”
When crews arrived from the nearby Kollen Park Station, they didn’t see any flames from the outside, but substantiated the report that smoke was filling the residence. “This initial crew immediately made entry to rescue the female occupant who was unable to escape, due to a physical condition that prevented her from being able to do so on her own,” Tinney said. “Once removed, the occupant was placed in the care of AMR (first responders) and transported to Holland Hospital for evaluation. A male occupant was able to escape on his own without injury. Two Holland Police Officers on scene were instrumental in identifying where the female occupant was so that crews could quickly affect her safe removal from the home.”
Firefighters eventually located a blaze in the basement of the house and quickly brought it under control. Direct fire damage was limited to a confined area of the basement, and although the cause of the fire wasn’t officially determined, Tinney said that, “initial findings suggest that damage to the home’s electrical service, caused by a falling tree, was a primary factor.”
Tinney added that the occupants should be able to return home within the week.
