Four Hope College student-athletes have been selected for all-region teams by the United Soccer Coaches organization.

The Flying Dutch’s Sarah Mikesell and Jenna Mustapha and the Flying Dutchmen’s Brandon Fles and Matt Wimmer are Region VIII honorees.

Mustapha is one of four first-team defenders on the women’s all-region team. Mikesell is a second-team forward.

Fles and Wimmer are third-team selections as a defender and midfielder, respectively.

MEN’S SWIM/DIVE

Hope College swimmer Josh Boss ’02 has been chosen as one of the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association’s 100 Greatest Men’s Swimmers & Divers of the past century. The selections were made as a part of the CSCAA’s 100th-year celebration. A seven-time national champion for the Flying Dutchmen, Boss is among 86 swimmers recognized. Fourteen divers were chosen as well by the CSCAA’s blue-ribbon panel of current and former swimmers, coaches, and members of the media.

Hope College sophomore Conor East was the MIAA Men’s Swimming Athlete of the Week for the first time last week. East clocked two of the Top 10 times in Flying Dutchmen history during the Kenyon College (Ohio) Total Performance Invitational. East recorded Hope’s sixth-fastest swim in the 400 individual medley and the seventh-fastest one in the 200 individual medley during the meet.

Hope College senior Kamaron Wilcox was chosen as the MIAA Men’s Diving Athlete of the Week for the sixth time last week. The senior mathematics and physics major recorded an NCAA Division III regional qualifying cut in 1-meter diving during a second-place finish at the Kenyon College (Ohio) Total Performance Invitational. Wilcox also placed fourth in 3-meter diving.

WOMEN’S SWIM/DIVE

Hope College sophomore Sophia Farbarzhevich was selected as the MIAA Women’s Diving Athlete of the Week for the first time last week. The Spanish major posted an NCAA Division III regional qualifying score and finished runner-up in 1-meter diving at the Kenyon College (Ohio) Total Performance Invitational and finished fifth in 3-meter diving.

Hope College freshman Sara Kraus was named the MIAA Women’s Swimming Athlete of the Week for the second time last week. Kraus set a school record in the 200-yard individual medley and swam a leg in a school-record 200 medley relay at the Kenyon College (Ohio) Total Performance Invitational.

VOLLEYBALL

The Hope College volleyball team finished ninth in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll. It is the Flying Dutch’s sixth Top 10 appearance in the AVCA’s final poll for a season. All-American Tracy Westra, pictured, and Hope posted a 25-5 record this season, claimed an MIAA regular-season title, and reached the regional finals in the NCAA Tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The top-ranked Hope College women’s basketball team defeated Grace Christian University, 104-27, on November 23 at DeVos Fieldhouse. The win was the Flying Dutch’s 50th in a row, a school record that also matches the seventh-longest in team history.

Hope College senior point guard Kasey DeSmit was the MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the first time last week. The physical education major led the top-ranked Flying Dutch to back-to-back wins at the Hope Tournament on November 19-20 at DeVos Fieldhouse that extended their win streak to 49 games. DeSmit was chosen as the MVP.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Hope College men’s basketball team split the weekend games at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic hosted at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Flying Dutchmen defeated 25th-ranked Cornerstone University, 74-69, on Friday but lost to Aquinas College, 79-75, on Saturday. There was no champion as Hope, Aquinas, Cornerstone, and Calvin University each went 1-1. Junior Clayton Dykhouse was named to the all-tournament team.
