Toronto FC announced Tuesday that Javier Perez will not return as head coach in 2022.
The move comes one day after the departure of general manager Ali Curtis.
Perez, 44, joined Toronto before the 2021 season as an assistant coach and took over as interim coach after Chris Armas was fired on July 4. The team removed the “interim” tag in August.
“We would like to thank Javier for his hard work this season,” Toronto FC President Bill Manning said. “He stepped into a difficult situation and was a true professional in every regard. We wish him well in his next endeavor.”
Perez compiled a record of 5-10-8 (23 points) at the helm for the Reds, who were 1-8-2 (five points) under Armas.
Toronto’s season ended Sunday with a 1-0 loss to rival CF Montreal in the Canadian Championship final.
Curtis left Monday after three years with the club to pursue new opportunities.
