KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Officials with the Michigan State Police (MSP) and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) are reminding drivers to adjust driving habits during winter weather.
“Ice and snow-covered roadways are on the way,” Lt. DuWayne Robinson said in a statement. “It is critical that drivers began to mentally plan for this reality by making the necessary driving adjustments to ensure the safety of themselves and others.”
Police say this is especially true when driving through construction zones, such as the 2.7 miles of eastbound I-94 between Lovers Lane and Sprinkle Road in Kalamazoo.
Work on this stretch of roadway has been delayed by a couple months, pushing back the reopening date for the eastbound lanes to at least the end of January 2022.
Plans to address potential traffic crash concerns specifically within this construction zone have been implemented by local, county and state authorities.
“It’s unusual to have an active construction zone with lane closures during the winter months, so we understand the unique challenges it will pose for the motoring public and our maintenance forces,” MDOT’s Nick Schirripa said. “Our snowplow operators will work to remove snow from the work zone and leave as much room as possible for traffic, but it’s important for drivers to reduce their speed, eliminate all distractions, and focus on safe driving so everyone gets home safely each night.”
While winter weather does create challenging driving conditions, drivers are expected to maintain control of their vehicles. According to Michigan Vehicle Code laws, it is the driver’s responsibility to drive at a “reasonable and proper” speed and always maintain control of their vehicle.
Police say explanations such as “I was going the posted speed limit,” or, “I was going with the flow of traffic,” are some of the justifications they hear from drivers following crashes during snowfalls.
Police remind readers that as a driver, you could be held responsible for any crash if the roadway conditions make your chosen speed unreasonable or improper.
Some tips for winter driving and preparedness:
- Make sure vehicle maintenance is up to date.
- Routinely check tire pressure.
- Ensure windshield wipers are good and keep solvent full.
- Keep winter survival kit in vehicle, including food and water.
- Keep cell phone charged.
- Reduce speed and brake earlier on icy/snowy roads.
- Refrain from tailgating by leaving plenty of space between vehicles.
Additional tips if involved in a crash within a construction zone or other location:
- Unless unsafe, stay in vehicle with seatbelt on.
- Call 911 for assistance.
- Activate emergency flashers.
- If vehicle is drivable and it’s safe, ramp off next exit and find safe place to park.
Motorists are encouraged to check Mi Drive before traveling for the latest lane, ramp and road closures to help plan a safe trip.
Beginning November 22, MSP plans to assign dedicated patrols within the eastbound I-94 construction zone in Kalamazoo during peak travel times, Monday – Friday between 5:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m., for quicker response to traffic incidents.
