THREE RIVERS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Three Rivers community is remembering the life of a fallen Kalamazoo County police officer killed in the line of duty last August.
Family, friends, and law enforcement gathered at Armstrong Park on Saturday, October 30, to honor Kalamazoo County Deputy Ryan Proxmire, who was shot August 14th during a vehicle pursuit of a suspect near Galesburg. Proxmire was wounded during the chase when the suspect fired at him from his vehicle and died at Bronson Methodist Hospital the following day.
Childhood friend Ryan Schnepp organized the dedication of a memorial bench in Proxmire’s honor. Schnepp said the bench, which is engraved with his name, is just a small way to ensure Proxmire is never forgotten.
Proxmire grew up in Three Rivers and was a 1999 graduate of Three Rivers High School.
He served over nine years as a deputy for the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office. Prior to that, he served for several years as a reserve deputy for the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department.
Proxmire died in the line of duty on August 15th.
