LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Less than 24 hours before Michigan State University hosts the University of Michigan for their annual Big Ten football clash Saturday, another special football game will be played at Munn Field in East Lansing.
Friday night’s Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) Unified Rivalry Series flag football game kicks off at 6:30 p.m.
The Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) Unified Rivalry Series originated in 2015. In its six-year history, the game has promoted respect and inclusion, featuring teams consisting of college students and Special Olympics athletes, both with and without intellectual disabilities, from the East Lansing and Ann Arbor areas.
“This game highlights Special Olympics Unified Sports at the highest level,” said Dan Ekonen, Senior Director of Program Leadership for Special Olympics Michigan. “It brings together the two schools from the biggest in-state rivalry to celebrate inclusion and acceptance. It really is what sports are all about.”
