LANSING MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The state’s highest court is reporting that it is considering making “Juneteenth” a statewide holiday for the courts.
Members of the Michigan Supreme Court say that they will accept public comment on the proposal and also hold a public hearing soon.
“Juneteenth” is celebrated on June 19th, and marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers delivered the news of freedom to slaves in Galveston, TX.
The day was made a federal holiday this year.
The state High Court did say that it may remove another current court holiday, such as Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, to make room for the Juneteenth holiday.
