LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – UPDATE: On October 7, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that legislation creating the Kevin D. White Memorial Highway was signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
MDOT officials say Senate Bill 48 renames a portion of I-94 in Benton Charter Township from the I-196 interchange to the Napier Avenue exit as the “Kevin D. White Memorial Highway.”
The name change was made in honor of Kevin D. White, an MDOT maintenance worker who died in October 2019 when he was struck by tires that had fallen off a passing semi while clearing debris along I-94.
The legislation was sponsored by Senator Kim LaSata, R-Coloma.
“Despite the risks that came with his job, Kevin dedicated nine years of his life to helping improve Southwest Michigan communities,’ LaSata said in a statement. “He worked to improve our safety while sacrificing his own.”
