MARSHALL, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s the end of an era for a once-popular shopping outlet in Michigan. The K-Mart store in Marshall, the last one in the entire state, is set to close for good in a couple of months. The store, located on Michigan Ave. just east of I-69, will likely shut its doors sometime in November but a specific date has not been given at this time.
The chain was a popular destination for shoppers in Michigan for decades, with the first store opening in the Detroit area in 1962 before blossoming to over 2,300 locations across the U.S.. By the late 90s and early 2000s, K-Mart began struggling with its identity and failed strategies. Competition from other outlets like Walmart and Target also led to its demise.
