MARTIN TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Investigators say speeding near a construction zone led to a chain reaction, four-vehicle crash on U.S. 131 in Allegan County over the weekend. The accident left one person dead.
Michigan State Police Troopers responded to the southbound lanes near mile marker 55 in Martin Township Saturday afternoon. A witness says an SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed and rear-ended a vehicle stopped on the roadway due to the traffic back-up.
65-year-old Diana Thornton of Indiana was in that vehicle and later died from her injuries. A Kalamazoo driving the SUV was not injured. The occupants of the two other vehicles involved only suffered minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation and its findings will eventually be sent to prosecutors to review what, if any, charges may be filed against the driver of the SUV.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by Allegan County Sheriff Department, Martin Fire Department, Wayland EMS, Plainwell EMS, and Life EMS.
