DETROIT, MI (WKZO-AM/FM) – Detroit knocked off AL East-leading Tampa Bay 10-4 in the opener of a 3-game series at Comerica Park. The Tigers broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 7th with a Jonathan Schoop grand slam; Victory Reyes added insurance with a 3-run homer in the 8th. Eric Haase also went deep with a solo shot in the 5th. Miguel Cabrera’s hitting streak ended at 9 at-bats, but not before he picked up a pair of hits Friday.
Scheduled starter Matthew Boyd was scratched due to elbow soreness and will be placed on the 10-day injured list; he was previously on the IL from mid-June until August 29. Tyler Alexander stepped in to start, while Jose Cisnero got the win in relief.
The series continues tonight with Casey Mize set to face the Rays’ Chris Archer.
