BATTLE CREEK MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Battle Creek Police Dept. has released more information regarding the officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon.
Chief Jim Blocker stated at a press conference that the Michigan State Police has taken over the investigation of the incident per procedure.
Blocker released details about the shooting, saying that the suspect, 27-year-old Kamren Brown, had banged on the door of a woman’s house, and that the women had called 9-1-1.
She could be heard screaming as Brown broke a window with the gun.
Brown took off and officers pursued, with the 22-year-old officer involved in the shooting repeatedly ordering Brown to stop.
Body cam footage revealed that the officer told Brown he wanted to help him, and as the officer attempted to pull Brown toward him, Brown pulled the gun from his pocket, ultimately putting the gun to his head as the officer re-drew his weapon.
Brown put the gun to his head and fired as the officer fired at him as well.
Despite first aid measures, Brown was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chief Blocker.
Brown was discovered to have two gunshot wounds, the self-inflicted one to his head, the second to his leg, which the officer fired.
The officer, who has two years’ service with the department, is currently on paid leave while the investigation continues.
