HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Saturday’s International Festival of Holland has a wide variety of events at the Holland Civic Center Place. Here’s a quick list, with details provided by the City of Holland’s Human Relations Department:
In the Civic Center’s Great Hall on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021:
11:30 am Pokagon Band of Potawatomi will start us off with a drum and dance presentation. Dance styles will include men’s traditional, men’s grass dance, men’s fancy dance, women’s traditional, women’s jingle, and women’s fancy shawl.
12:00 Welcome by Mayor Nathan Bocks and remarks by special guest Fernando Gonzalez Saiffe, Michigan Consul General for Mexico.
12:30 pm Ballet Folklórico Sol Azteca brings the Latino culture experience through folklórico dance, music, costume design, and construction. A program of Holland Public Schools, this group of PreK-12 dancers are taught dances from various regions of Mexico by Angela Gonzalez-Urbina and mentored by Holland High School students and alumni.
1:10 pm Compañeros de Flamenco brings the vibrant art of Flamenco to life. Their colorful costumes, compelling guitar music and intricate footwork tell the story of Spain’s multicultural heritage.
2:00 pm Neil Jacobs – World 12 String Guitar covers the world vibe with music as diverse as Gypsy, World, Celtic, Balkan Folk, Jazz, Classical and Modern Fingerstyle, while transforming his 12-string acoustic guitar into his own personal orchestra. Neil draws inspiration from his world travels and experiences and shares his fascinating stories and humor with his audience.
3:00 pm Raion Taiko Japanese Drumming Ensemble. Raion Taiko brings the “sound of thunder” and rhythm of rain through the soundscapes of Japanese taiko drumming. Feel the heartbeat of the drums pulsing with the lively spirit of this Midwest taiko arts ensemble from the Great Lakes Taiko
Center in southeast Michigan.
4:00 pm Motherland House Concert showcases original African music, spoken word, art and real-life stories from African artists in an intimate and interactive setting.
5:00 pm Sangeeta’s Music and Dance of India. Sangeeta Kar is an internationally renowned exponent of Odissi, the oldest classical dance form of India. She is also an award-winning singer and performs regularly on Indian TV, movies, stage, and CDs. ‘Education through entertainment’ is Sangeeta’s motto.
6:00 pm Gratitude Steel Band performs Reggae, Soca, Calypso, Pop.
7:00 pm Tumbao Bravo authentic rhythms of Cuba with rich, jazz harmonic compositions written by band members.
8:00 pm Blackthorn a musical ramble across Ireland. Their repertoire of traditional songs of emigration, ballads, shanties, jigs and reels combine with songs from Ireland’s best contemporary songwriters.
