DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Detroit Red Wings used the sixth overall pick in Friday’s NHL Entry Draft to select defenseman Simon Edvinsson of Sweden. The 6-foot-4, 198-pound Edvinsson saw time in three different leagues during the 2020-21 campaign. Edvinsson also represented his country at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, racking up five assists in five games.
The Wings also made a deal with Dallas and moved up to the 15th position where they selected goaltender Sebastian Cossa. Dallas got the 23rd, 48th and 138th overall selections in the trade. The 18-year-old Cossa dominated the Western Hockey League season with the Edmonton Oil Kings in 2020-21. He led the league in both goals-against average (1.57) and save percentage (0.941), while tying for the league lead in shutouts (4) and ranking second in wins (17) among his 17-1-1 record.
Buffalo selected University of Michigan defenseman Owen Power with the number one pick. Power was one of five players with U of M who were taken in the first round.
