Wil Myers hit two homers and drove in seven runs, and Jake Cronenworth hit for the third cycle in franchise history Friday night as the visiting San Diego Padres scored a franchise-record 24 runs in a 24-8 rout of the Washington Nationals.
Nine different Padres drove in runs, with six having at least two RBIs.
Myers’ fourth career grand slam capped a seven-run Padres second after the score was tied 3-3 after one inning. The Padres scored in eight of the nine innings, including six runs in the sixth and four in the eighth, and finished with 22 hits.
Cronenworth got the cycle with a sixth-inning single. He had doubled in the second, tripled in the third and homered in the fifth. He finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Tommy Pham fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. He was 4-for-6 with a walk, two RBIs, and he tied a franchise record with five runs scored.
Chris Paddack (5-6) earned the win, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk in five innings. Erick Fedde (4-7) took the loss, giving up six runs on three hits and four walks in 1 1/3 innings.
A’s 5, Indians 4
Jed Lowrie belted a two-run, walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Oakland a dramatic win over visiting Cleveland in their return from the All-Star break.
Lowrie’s 11th homer of the season came after Cleveland’s Bradley Zimmer had broken a late tie with a solo home run and three Indians relievers combined for three innings of shutout ball.
But the fourth reliever, closer Emmanuel Clase (3-5), had no such luck, allowing a leadoff single in the ninth to Elvis Andrus and Lowrie’s blast one out later. The walk-off win was Oakland’s eighth of the season. The A’s have won three in a row.
Red Sox 4, Yankees 0
Eduardo Rodriguez allowed two hits over 5 2/3 innings and combined with two relievers on a three-hitter as visiting Boston beat short-handed New York.
The Red Sox, in first place in the AL East, improved to 7-0 against the Yankees this season and pushed fourth-place New York nine games off the pace. Rodriguez (7-5) struck out eight and issued two walks. Tanner Houck pitched three scoreless innings and notched his first career save.
Christian Arroyo hit a two-run homer in Boston’s three-run second inning, and J.D. Martinez hit a long solo homer in the eighth. Losing pitcher Jordan Montgomery allowed three runs on three hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked two.
Blue Jays 10, Rangers 2
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two home runs and four RBIs, starter Robbie Ray pitched into the seventh inning and Toronto defeated visiting Texas.
Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run homer for Toronto and Marcus Semien and Randal Grichuk added solo shots for the Blue Jays. Ray (8-4) allowed no runs, four hits and two walks while striking out eight in 6 2/3 innings.
Eli White hit a two-run homer for the Rangers.
Brewers 11, Reds 6
Avisail Garcia, Willy Adames and Luis Urias homered to help visiting Milwaukee erase a three-run deficit and earn a victory over Cincinnati.
Adames added a two-run double in a five-run eighth and finished with four RBIs for the Brewers, who moved five games ahead of second-place Cincinnati in the NL Central.
Compounding the loss for the Reds was the early exit of their MVP candidate and NL batting leader Nick Castellanos. Milwaukee starter Adrian Houser came too far inside with a fastball, drilling Castellanos in the lower right forearm, near the wrist. X-rays were negative, manager David Bell said after the game.
Rays 7, Braves 6 (10)
Austin Meadows’ tiebreaking, two-out single in the 10th lifted Tampa Bay to its first extra-innings win in nearly two months and a victory over host Atlanta.
Hitless in three career at-bats against reliever Jesse Chavez (0-2), Meadows (2-for-4, three RBIs) lined a 3-1 pitch to right to score Brett Phillips, who narrowly beat the throw home for the Rays. Pete Fairbanks tossed a perfect 10th for his fourth save.
The Braves’ All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman went 4-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs, a stolen base and ripped his 20th homer. Austin Riley and Dansby Swanson also went deep as Atlanta built a pair of two-run leads.
Phillies 5, Marlins 2 (Game 1)
Travis Jankowski doubled, singled twice and drove in a career-high four runs as host Philadelphia defeated Miami in the first game of a doubleheader.
Didi Gregorius walked twice and scored two runs. Rhys Hoskins also scored twice for the Phillies. Matt Moore tossed 4 1/3 effective innings and reached nine strikeouts for the first time since 2017.
Miguel Rojas led the Marlins with three hits and an RBI. Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (5-9) struggled through three innings and allowed four hits and five runs, though three were earned.
Marlins 7, Phillies 0 (Game 2)
Jesus Aguilar homered, singled twice and drove in four runs to lift Miami past host Philadelphia in the second game of a doubleheader.
Starling Marte homered, doubled twice, scored three runs and knocked in three for the Marlins. Miguel Rojas also had two hits.
Andrew McCutchen walked twice for the Phillies, who managed just two hits. Phillies starter Zach Eflin lasted only 3 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and six runs, five earned. Eflin (4-7) struck out five and walked two.
Giants 7, Cardinals 2
Mike Yastrzemski hit two homers and drove in four runs to lift visiting San Francisco past St. Louis.
LaMonte Wade Jr. added a three-run homer for the Giants, who extended their winning streak to five games. Brandon Crawford left the game for San Francisco with an apparent leg injury, while Logan Webb filled in for starter Kevin Gausman, who was a late scratch. Webb lasted four innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk.
Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (7-6) worked six innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Paul Goldschmidt smacked a homer for St. Louis on offense.
Mariners 6, Angels 5
Kyle Seager and Mitch Haniger homered, Chris Flexen pitched seven strong innings and Seattle held off a late rally to defeat host Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.
Flexen (9-3) won his fourth straight decision and defeated the Angels for the second time in less than a week after a 2-0 victory last Saturday in Seattle in which he allowed only three hits in seven innings. This time, the right-hander gave up six hits, including a home run to Max Stassi.
Angels left-hander Andrew Heaney (5-7) allowed four runs on six hits in four innings. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out four.
Pirates 4, Mets 1
Bryan Reynolds and Wilmer Difo homered to lead Pittsburgh past visiting New York in a game that featured a benches-clearing incident.
Adam Frazier added a two-run single for the Pirates.
Pittsburgh starter Chad Kuhl (3-5) pitched five innings, giving up one run (none earned) on two hits, with five walks and three strikeouts. Richard Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 13th save.
Astros 7, White Sox 1
Yuli Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Lance McCullers Jr. struck out 10 in seven strong innings, and Houston cruised to a win over host Chicago.
Myles Straw added three RBIs for Houston, which improved to 5-0 over the White Sox this season. Kyle Tucker finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Michael Brantley belted a solo home run.
Yoan Moncada drove in the lone run for the White Sox, who lost for the first time since July 5 against the Minnesota Twins.
Cubs 5, Diamondbacks 1
Jason Heyward smacked a two-run homer, Anthony Rizzo and Patrick Wisdom hit solo shots, and Kyle Hendricks won his 10th straight decision as Chicago defeated Arizona in Phoenix.
Hendricks (12-4) allowed one run and six hits over six innings while remaining unbeaten since May 9. He struck out four and walked three and is tied for the major league lead in victories.
Josh Rojas delivered a run-scoring double for Arizona, which saw its major league worst record fall to 26-67. The Diamondbacks have dropped three straight games. The Cubs won for the third time in five games since enduring an 11-game losing streak.
Royals 9, Orioles 2
Whit Merrifield went 4-for-4 with three RBIs as host Kansas City clobbered Baltimore in the first game of a three-game series. The Royals tied their season high with 15 hits.
Nicky Lopez added two hits and a career-high four RBIs. Josh Staumont (1-2) earned the win as one of five one-inning relievers for the Royals. He struck out two batters.
Pedro Severino had a home run among three hits for the Orioles. Baltimore starter Keegan Akin (0-5) took the loss.
