LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — If you think the mosquitos are bad in West Michigan lately, you aren’t alone. You’ve probably been swatting and flailing when outside, even for just a minute. And the time of day doesn’t seem to matter. It has quickly become one of the worst years for mosquitos in recent memory.
“This is a huge mosquito outbreak. It’s the kind where you walk in the daytime and they bother you. Normally, mosquitos are biting in the evening.”
Ned Walker, a professor at Michigan State University says the large influx of mosquitos can be blamed on the severe drought earlier this year, and then the quick flip to heavy rains and floodwaters.
“We just basically stimulated the environment to produce these mosquitos. And that’s what people are experiencing broadly across lower Michigan.”
If the weather stays humid and rainy, there very well could be a continuing surge of mosquitos throughout the rest of the summer season.
