On Friday, July 2, 2021, Michael Emmet Lozon, husband and father, passed away at the age of 72, after a 5 month battle with Glioblastoma.
Michael was born May 17, 1948, in Grand Haven to Elsie and Howard Lozon. He lived much of his younger life in Alpena, Michigan before moving to southwest Michigan. He received a bachelor’s degree in Photo Journalism from Central Michigan University in 1976 and has worked for several Michigan Newspapers. He refused to retire but continued his career as an independent contractor specializing in documenting the histories of local businesses and personal memoirs of local Entrepreneurs. But his passion for photography surfaced during those later years and he spent hours documenting the happenings at Ottawa County Parks, the Tulip Time festival, as well as other events in the area. He was married to his best friend Jan (Souter) Lozon and has a daughter Mandy Beth from his first marriage.
Michael enjoyed history since he was a young child and often talked about a family trip taken to experience the Civil War battlefields. He also loved writing and shared his knowledge by teaching many writing groups at the Herrick Public Library. During the later years, his goal was to always capture the perfect picture, no matter where it was. He authored 12 historical books but his most enjoyable project was capturing the history, life, and spirit of Holland’s Farmers Market. He spent hours at the market taking pictures and talking with visitors in preparation for writing the book titled “Where City and Country Connect – How the Holland Farmers Market Grew from a Few Vendors to a Community Treasure”.
He was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Elsie (Benac) Lozon.
He is survived by his wife Janice of 39 years, his daughter Mandy & Michael Stahl, his sister Judith Shilts and his brother Ron and Janet Lozon, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, gifts, or cards, Michael would be happy if everyone visited a library and pick up any book on local history and read it in his honor. Donations can be made to Hospice of Holland. Arrangements are by Dykstra Funeral Homes-Downtown Chapel.
