DETROIT (WKZO-AM/FM) – Joaquin Niemann and Tom Lewis each shot rounds of 3-under 69 yesterday at the Detroit Golf Club and top the leaderboard at the halfway point of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at 10-under. Troy Merrit, Chris Kirk, and Max Homa are a shot back.
Last year’s champion, Bryson DeChambeau, missed the cut and once again turned down media requests. He had parted with longtime caddie Tim Tucker before the opening round.
Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama tested positive for COVID-19 and withdrew from the tournament.
Phil Mickelson said that he would reconsider returning to Detroit next year if at least 50,000 fans sign a fan-organized petition and commit to doing a random act of kindness. Lefty had said after the first round that he’d never return to Detroit following the publication of a story in The Detroit News that alleged that a bookie cheated him out of a half-million dollars.
