Sharon Rose (Warfield) Lockett, 74, of Kalamazoo, MI passed away Sunday, June 13, 2021, at Golden Orchards Assisted Living Residence in Fennville, MI. Born April 28, 1947 in Kalamazoo, she was the daughter of the late Reverend Bernis Warfield, Jr. and Irene Elizabeth (Baker) Warfield and was the wife of the late Heldric D. Lockett. Dr. Lockett was a lifelong, passionate educator who was highly respected and adored by teachers, students, and families. Dr. Lockett earned numerous degrees (B.A., M.A., and Doctorate) from Western Michigan University. Her career in education spanned more than forty years prior to retirement in 2009. In Dr. Lockett’s early years, she had served as the Director of Education for the Community Base Education Program in Kalamazoo and had been a dedicated elementary school teacher and principal for Kalamazoo Public Schools for many years. In the mid-1980’s she taught and wrote the curriculum for the American School of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Dr. Sharon Lockett served as a senior consultant for Lee Canter & Associates and later went on to become the Director of the Master of Education Program at Marygrove College in Detroit, MI. Dr. Lockett retired from Paramount Charter Academy, where she was the principal for eleven years. She was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Dr. Lockett had attended Christian Life Center (now Stones Church) in Kalamazoo where she was committed to serving in many ministry capacities.
She is preceded in death by her late husband, Heldric Lockett; parents Irene and Bernis Jr; and granddaughter, Marisa Lockett-Davis.
She is survived by her children, Christopher Lockett and Melanie Lockett; siblings, Donald Warfield, Larry (Dena) Warfield, Raja (Shelly) Warfield, Deborah Warfield, Anita Warfield, Latfiah Warfield, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at Stones Church (formerly Christian Life Center) at 4:00 pm, located at 1225 West Paterson St., Kalamazoo, Michigan, 49007.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the development office at Western Michigan University earmarked for the College of Education and Human Development for support of the Future Teachers Program in honor of Dr. Sharon Lockett. Contribution envelopes will be available at the service.
