HEATH TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A breaking and entering suspect who was fatally shot by a Michigan State Police trooper was unarmed, according to an update from MLive Tuesday.
Michigan State Police Lt. DuWayne Robinson said that more details on the suspect will be released later in the week, and that it is believed the trooper felt his life was in danger.
The trooper was not wearing a body cam at the time, but his vehicle dash cam picked up audio from the incident, according to Robinson.
An additional report from WOOD TV Tuesday said witnesses saw the suspect reach to grab the trooper’s gun, at which time the suspect was shot.

A suspect in a breaking and entering case was fatally shot by a Michigan State Police (MSP) trooper on Monday, according to a report from MLive.
According to the report, the shooting took place around 3 p.m. in Heath Township, located in Allegan County. The trooper was responding to a call about a suspected breaking and entering taking place at Oak Road near 132nd Avenue.
MSP Public Information Officer DuWayne Robinson said that an altercation took place between the trooper and suspect, during which the suspect was shot one time.
The Trooper then attempted to provide first aid services, but the suspect was pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspect and one of the homeowners knew each other from a past relationship.
Robinson added that it was currently unknown if the suspect was armed, and that the trooper received injuries to the face. The trooper was also not wearing a body cam at the time of the incident.
Per department policy and procedure, the shooting is being investigated by detectives from the MSP Sixth District to avoid any potential conflict of interest, and the involved trooper has been placed on administrative leave.
Once complete, the investigation will be forwarded to the Allegan County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The case remains under investigation at this time.
