SOUTH BEND, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Police officials in northern Indiana, near the Michigan border, believe legalized recreational marijuana in Michigan has led to a spike in arrests for people driving under the influence of pot.
According to the South Bend Tribune, prosecutors in St. Joseph County, Indiana filed 103 cases of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by a controlled substance in 2020. It’s a 45% increase from 71 similar cases in 2019. And it also came during a year when travel was limited at times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Officers in South Bend and Mishawaka have been told to keep an eye out for drivers hiking over the state line to buy and use marijuana in Michigan, before returning to Indiana, where recreational pot remains illegal.
