HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Another sign of things returning to some sense of normalcy in downtown Holland is the return of the weekly Street Performer Series.
Cancelled last year as a casualty of the COVID 19 outbreak, a variety of individual and group acts traditionally takes over 8th Street from College to River Avenues for a two-hour span on Thursday evenings between the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays. While the exact starting date for 2021 hasn’t been determined yet, pending the blessing of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for allowing outdoor gatherings, Downtown Holland is accepting online applications through next Friday, May 28th, for acts of between one and three persons.
Just because the Street Performer Series hasn’t resumed doesn’t mean that street performers have not been seen in downtown Holland, according to Executive Director Linda Hart of the Holland Area Visitors Bureau.
“The (Principal Shopping District) left (street performers) open to apply for permits,” she said on “WHTC Morning News” during a recent appearance. “They can apply for the permits, pay a small fee, and entertain us on the streets. It’s like ‘pop-up’ street performers, and I think it’s very exciting.”
The Street Performer Series is supported by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs through the Holland Area Arts Council.
