PARK TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A tangible symbol of a $98 million school bond proposal that passed a couple of years ago was on display on Monday evening (May 17, 2021).
Officials of West Ottawa Public Schools were joined by those from the architectural firm GMB, contractors GDK, and current West Ottawa High coaches and student/athletes in a ceremonial ground break of a new athletics complex on the main High School campus. When completed by the start of Academic 2023, the new stadium will replace Panther Stadium, built on the site of the old high school (now Harbor Lights Middle School), which was the oldest non-renovated such facility along the Lakeshore.
West Ottawa School Board President Kate McCoy was thankful for the voters. “We are so incredibly grateful for the support you have given our district over the years,” she said during the ceremony. “This project has been a long time coming. It is something we have tried to do many times before, and we are so grateful that it is happening now. We’re so excited that we’re going to be continuing the vision that we have for this campus.”
The new stadium will also have artificial turf, which brings it in line with all of the other gridiron football complexes for Holland, Holland Christian, Zeeland, Hamilton, Saugatuck and Fennville high schools.
