DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kyle Hendricks took a shutout into the ninth as the Chicago Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers 5-1 Sunday afternoon.
Hendricks finished with one run allowed on eight hits while striking out eight over eight-plus innings. Ian Happ was 3-for-4 with a homer and a pair of RBI in the win, Chicago’s second in three games.
Jonathan Schoop drove in the lone Detroit run, which lost two-of-three in the series. Matthew Boyd took the loss, giving up four earned, five in total, over six frames as he fell to 2-and-4.
The Tigers dropped two-of-three in the series.
The Tigers are out west and will open up a six-game road trip tonight against the Mariners in Seattle. After three games with the M’s, Detroit will visit Kansas City for a weekend set with the Royals.
Casey Mize will get the ball tonight in the series opener in Seattle. The opening pitch is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. Michigan time.
