LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Now that it’s Springtime, you’ll probably start seeing some bird nests popping up outside your home or in the yard. And you, or especially your kids and pets, may get curious. Are there eggs in it? Have they hatched?
Michigan DNR wildlife coordinator Hanna Schauer has some advice on how to enjoy it, but also not cause a problem.
“If you come across a nest, the best thing to do is leave it alone and give it plenty of space. If you can, keep your pets away from it as well. That way the hen doesn’t get spooked off and leave the nest for some reason. She will sit and incubate her eggs for about a month.”
You may not realize it, but Schauer says migratory birds, nests, and eggs are protected by federal law.
