KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB/WNWN) – A 13-year-old boy from Branch County’s Sherwood Township has died from injuries he suffered on April 5 when he and two siblings were struck by a vehicle while they were riding their bikes.
The family of Landen Risner posted on the Risner Support Group Facebook page that the youngster passed away at 5:50 a.m. Sunday morning.
The family stated, “We honor Landen for the special boy that he was and special time we had with him on this earth. He will remain with all of us forever in our hearts. Thank you for all of your love, generosity, prayers and support. All of you helped make a difference and gave Landen the best chance he had to fight and for that we are grateful to all of you.”
The Risner family is requesting people to respect this time, “so that we may start to heal and be able to be present together. Please no calls, texts or messages at this time. We will share funeral information on the Risner Support Group Facebook page as soon as it becomes available.”
Landen was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo with a severe brain injury after he was struck by the vehicle in the area of Ralston and Arney Roads. His six-year-old brother Roman suffered a femur fracture and had plates and screws inserted during surgery. Their 14-year-old sister Elizabeth suffered minor injuries.
The suspect vehicle in the hit and run crash was found the next day at a residence on Hackman Road near Sturgis thanks to a citizen’s tip. The driver was identified as a 42 year old Sturgis man who has been interviewed by the Michigan State Police. Their investigation is continuing.
The man’s phone has been examined by the Michigan State Police 5th District Computer Crimes Unit. A blood draw from the man was sent to the Michigan State Police crime laboratory in Lansing.
