OAKLAND, CA (WKZO AM/FM) – Make room for another last place team in Detroit.
The Tigers were shut out by the Oakland A’s 3-0 on Friday. That dropped the 6-8 Tigers into a tie with the Minnesota Twins for last place in the American League Central. The Tigers are now part of the Motor City Cellar Dwellers Club along with the Lions, Red Wings and Pistons.
Oakland winning pitcher Frankie Montas allowed just two hits in six innings of work as the red hot A’s won their sixth straight game. Tiger losing pitcher Jose Urena had a career-high eight strikeouts in seven innings but he got no hitting support as the team batting average for the anemic Tigers offense dropped to .218.
The Tigers play at Oakland again Saturday afternoon with Casey Mize scheduled to start for Detroit against Oakland’s Cole Irvin.
