VOLLEYBALL
Fittingly, a service ace closed out the 17th-ranked Hope College volleyball team’s 3-0 win at Adrian College on Wednesday.
The Flying Dutch delivered a season-high nine service aces during the 25-22, 25-11, 25-13 victory, including on match point from junior outside hitter Ana Grunewald of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS).
Six different servers recorded aces for Hope (4-0 overall and MIAA). Senior setter Adair Cutler (Lansing, Michigan/Lansing Christian) totaled three, while Grunewald had two.
Grunewald’s final ace enabled the Flying Dutch to score the final two points of the match. A kill from senior outside hitter Rose Thompson (Coopersville, Michigan/Unity Christian) preceded Grunewald’s serve.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The Hope College women’s tennis team blanked rival Calvin University, 9-0, on Wednesday at the Heeringa-VandePoel Stadium Courts on an unseasonably hot April day.
The Flying Dutch improved their record to 5-2 overall with a 2-0 MIAA record. Calvin fell to 2-5 overall and has an 0-3 league record.
At No. 1 singles, junior Sydney Jackson of Fort Wayne, Indiana (Carroll) defeated Calvin’s Alexis Bonner, 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, senior Leah Newhof of Caledonia, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian) topped Calvin’s Emily Schullenboom, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 3 singles, senior Bailey Chorney of Waunakee, Wisconsin (Waunakee) posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Calvin’s Grace Brown.
BASEBALL
The Hope College baseball team could not make a fast start hold up in an 11-8 loss to Calvin University on Wednesday at Boeve Stadium. The Flying Dutchmen dropped to 9-7 on the season. The game did not count in the MIAA standings.
Hope scored the first seven runs of the game. Catcher Cal Barrett (Chelsea, Michigan/Chelsea HS) delivered an RBI single in the first inning to put Hope on the board.
In the second, right fielder Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan/Hudsonville) followed a run-scoring single from designated hitter Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan/East Grand Rapids) with a two-run double to center.
Calvin tied the score with a six-run fifth, then hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth.
