According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Eric Westveer, deputies and first responders were dispatched to Cleveland Street (M-104) east of 144th Avenue just before 2 PM. A eastbound SUV, driven by a 76-year-old Chesterfield man, tried to pass a slower vehicle ahead on the two-lane roadway, moved into the westbound lanes, and slammed head-on into a westbound SUV.
“The driver of (the westbound vehicle) suffered critical injuries and was pinned in her car,” Westveer said in an initial department statement. “After being freed by Fire-Rescue, she was transported by (North Ottawa Health Services) EMS to an area hospital.
“The driver of (the eastbound vehicle) sustained serious injuries and was (also) transported by NOHS EMS to an area hospital.”
About four hours later, Westveer issued an update statement: “The driver of the (westbound vehicle), 51-year-old Melanie Dunham of Spring Lake, was transported to Mercy Hospital in Muskegon and has died as a result of her injuries sustained in the crash.”
The east-west trunk road was closed in both directions at the crash scene for several hours while the drivers were attended to and the incident was fully investigated.
