LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — As Michigan now has the highest rate of confirmed cases of COVID-19 variants of any state in the U.S., some experts say there are warning signs of the state birthing its own new variant.
WWMT spoke to Dr. Nigel Paneth from Michigan State University who says as the transmission of the virus increases, the risk of mutations and new variants that could end up having high mortality for younger people and become more resistant to vaccines, becomes more possible. He said the potential for a new variant was one of his biggest concerns as cases surge.
A spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said the possibility of a Michigan COVID-19 variant is being watched very closely.
