LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It was one year ago today the first cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Michigan.
Since then, nearly 600,000 residents in the state have contracted the virus and over 15,650 have died. It has wreaked havoc on the economy, left businesses shuttered, derailed careers, and changed all our lives, likely for a long time. Governor Gretchen Whitmer told MSNBC that the one bright spot is that there are three vaccines fighting it.
“It is really a miracle that we have these kinds of vaccines on the market already just a year into this experience. We have to use every tool in our arsenal.”
She says with just over 10% of the state’s population fully inoculated, there is still a long way to go. Recovery will take time, careful steps, and patience.
“We’ve re-engaged most sectors of our economy but with limitations and safety protocols in place. We’re making small steps forward but now is no time to spike the football. We are nowhere near done yet.”
Within a day of March 10 last year, a State of Emergency was declared leading to travel bans, closings of businesses, schools, universities, and churches, and the cancellation of nearly all major events and social gatherings across the state.
