GALESBURG, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Last month, the Consumers Energy Foundation announced that its “Put Your Town on the Map!” competition was back after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This competition is an effort to strengthen rural communities with $50,000 in grants to energize Michigan’s small towns.
On Monday, officials announced that a total of 95 communities from around the state applied for a grant. They also announced that a project in Galesburg is one of the top 10 finalists.
“Galesburg has proposed to enhance walkability in the downtown area by placing fun, simple, educational, and directional signage along sidewalks and foot paths downtown,” officials said in a statement. “Additional lighting and a resting/recharging station for those using nearby hiking trails will also be placed. Educational signage in the city park will be placed to highlight the diverse vegetation and wildlife of the Kalamazoo River.
In addition, officials provided the full list of finalists to WKZO, noting that one had to be disqualified for a total of nine.
