HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — A 19-year-old Zeeland man succumbed to injuries sustained in a snowmobile crash in Allendale Township just before 11:45 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, 2021.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Christopher Dill, the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office notified his department around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb., 20, 2021, that Tyler John “TJ” Vankovering had died at Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. That was where he had been taken after the crash off of Pierce Street, west of 64th Avenue.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies, with Allendale Township firefighters and a LIFE EMS crew that responded to the incident, found that the Vankovering had been headed west, along Pierce Street, when the snowmobile hit a utility pole with such force the pole broke, sending power lines across the road. The driver was not wearing a helmet at the time.
Dill indicated nobody else was injured or involved in the crash, which remains under investigation.
