HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A Holland man suffered burns in a house fire at 1003 College Avenue on Friday, Jan. 29, 2021.
Firefighters were summoned at 8:11 p.m., according to Holland Fire Capt. Chris Tinney, finding the single-story family home ablaze.
The one occupant of the home escaped but was burned and went by AMR ambulance to Holland Hospital for treatment.
Tinney noted that firefighters were attacking the fire as they were ensuring no one else was in the house, and those searching did so with smoke so heavy there was “almost no visibility.”
Fire crews remained on the scene until 10 p.m. , making sure to douse hidden fires in voids and other spaces.
The male patient was transported to Holland Hospital by American Medical Response for evaluation and treatment for minor burn injuries.
Damage estimates are not available at this time but fire damage included the kitchen and dining room areas with smoke damage throughout. The cause of the fire appears to be unintentional, the result of cooking, according to Fire Marshal Bret Groendyke.
“This is the third significant residential fire in Holland since the first of the year that has resulted in injury to an occupant,” Tinney said in an email to media. “The department would like to remind community members to make sure they have working smoke alarms in their homes and to test them at least once a month.”
