HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – “The Bread Man” has delivered his last loaf.
The Holland Rescue Mission announced this week that Bill Plumert, the ministry’s longest-serving volunteer, has retired after 22 years. Most of that time, the Hudsonville man would go to various local grocers on Saturday mornings to pick up excess and day-old baked goods. He would then take them back to the mission’s headquarters off of River Avenue to feed those being cared for by the ministry before sharing that bread with those residents for lunch.
Due to family concerns, the 89-year-old Plumert has decided to end his service. “We’re supposed to love each other and care for each other,” he said to Scott J. Watson during Friday’s “Hearing Voices” segment on “WHTC Morning News,” “and when you are doing that, there is just a satisfaction that you’re doing the work that God has put you on this earth for.”
The Holland Rescue Mission honored Plumert and his wife during his 20th anniversary with the ministry in 2018, and gave him a surprise gift before his retirement.
