EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced Sunday night that all school sports activities, including practices and contests, are suspended through at least December 8 or until new orders are amended by the state.
It came after Governor Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Sunday announced new restrictions due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases and deaths.
The three ongoing MHSAA fall tournaments for girls swimming and diving, girls volleyball, and 11 man and eight man football have been suspended, not cancelled.
MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl says they will be exploring all options to complete these three remaining Fall
tournaments. At this same time, discussions will take place to revise Winter sports plans that will include updated practice and competition calendars.
Uyl says the MHSAA’s goal since June remains unchanged as they will continue to plan for three sports seasons that can all be completed during the 2020-21 school year.
He went on to say, “the MHSAA supports the actions needed by our state government and health department leaders. All of us need to do our part now to reverse the concerning COVID numbers in Michigan to give all of our students the chance to participate, practice and compete again as we have been able to do safely since August.”
The only allowed coach-player contact and activities for all sports is virtual communication and meetings through at least December 8 or until these new orders are amended.
