HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A COVID-19 outbreak will temporarily shutter Zeeland East and West high schools, and put those students on remote learning plans Nov. 2-6, 2020, Zeeland Public School officials announced Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020.
School officials alerted students, staff, parents and guardians to say they were “aware of a potentially large exposure to COVID-19 at both ZEHS and ZWHS. ZPS is working in partnership with the Ottawa County Department of Public Health to quarantine over 14 staff and more than 200 students.”
The safest option is to close the high school campus, according to the school’s message, beginning Thursday, Oct. 29 through Friday, Nov. 6.
That minimizes the spread of the virus within the schools and the community as a whole, while allowing time for contract tracing and allow school officials time to make sure all classrooms have qualified teachers.
Students and staff who need to quarantine for 14 days. Those who are not in quarantine will be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities, such as theatre and athletics.
All other schools in the district will remain open.
With no formal classes, high school students are being told to catch up on their school work. At the same time school officials will prepare for a full week of remote learning.
Remote classes is set to begin on Monday, Nov. 2. In-person learning is set to resume on Monday, Nov. 9. ZPS students with Tech Center classes are excused for Thursday and Friday.
Those not in quarantine can return to the Tech Center beginning Monday, Nov. 2, 2020.
