ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – There will be no debate on Wednesday night between US House Representative Bill Huizenga and Democratic challenger Bryan Berghoef.
That’s because the five-term Republican from Zeeland posted on Twitter around 1:30 PM on Wednesday: “Earlier today, I was expected to appear with the Vice President. While taking part in offsite testing protocols, I took a rapid test that came back positive for COVID-19. I am awaiting the results of a PCR test and I am self isolating until I have confirmed results.”
Huizenga was referring to a Wednesday afternoon campaign stop by Vice President Mike Pence at a suburban Grand Rapids firm near Ford Airport.
He was slated to appear with Berghoef at a debate hosted by the Grand Haven Tribune, which was canceled when word of Huizenga’s illness came through. The challenger had this reply to the incumbent’s Twitter post: “Praying for good health for you, Rep. Huizenga, and for your family.”
Dr. Rob Davidson, a vocal critic of Huizenga who lost to the Republican in the 2018 General Election, had this response: “Hope you’re doing all right. Stay safe.”
