UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM) – For the first time since 1998, the high school football season for most schools across the state will start in the month of September.
Due to COVID 19 safety restrictions, gridiron teams will begin what is now a six-game regular season on Friday evening, picking up the 2020 schedule with week four match ups. At 6:40 PM, hear the Fruitport at Hamilton contest with Greg Chandler on 99 7 and 1450 WHTC, or the Parchment at Saugatuck encounter on The Lakeshore’s 92 7 The Van.
For the second straight year, health concerns about Eastern Equine Encephalitis is compelling schools to move up starting times of games, in order to cut down on possible mosquito bites at or near dusk that could lead to the disease. Contests that will begin early on Friday night include a 6 PM kickoff for West Ottawa at Caledonia, and 5 PM for Zeeland West at Wyoming.
Other match ups that have the more traditional 7 PM starts include Muskegon versus Holland at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium, Holland Christian at Allendale, Grand Rapids Union versus Zeeland East at Zeeland Stadium, and Fennville at Lawton.

Jose Ramirez had four hits, including a homer, and drove in four runs, as visiting Cleveland cruised past the Tigers on Thursday night, 10-3. The two teams continue their series at Comerica Park on Friday evening; our next Tigers broadcast on 99 7 and 1450 WHTC is on Saturday night at 5:45 PM when Detroit is home to the Indians.
Jose Abreu’s RBI single tied the game in the seventh inning, and Eloy Jimenez followed with a RBI double that plated the decisive marker, as the White Sox rallied past visiting Minnesota at Guaranteed Rate Field on Thursday afternoon, 4-3. While Minnesota stays in Chicago to begin a weekend series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday evening, the Pale Hose are in Cincinnati to battle the Reds on Friday night.
The Cubs were idle on Thursday.
